Ngaruwanajirri means ‘helping one another’
At Wurrumiyanga on Bathurst Island, one beautiful building known as the Tiwi Sistine
Chapel or The Keeping Place houses a small group of Tiwi artists who attend daily to create artwork in a peaceful
environment.
The Keeping Place
Our beautifully designed heritage listed Ngaruwanajirri Building is also known as the Keeping Place and very evocatively as the “Tiwi Sistine Chapel “ due to the detailed and historic painted murals by past masters of Tiwi design and culture that remain revered on our curved ceiling.
We are very lucky to inhabit a magnificent building that houses a fluctuating group of up to twelve artists.
